tales of a student teacher.

I'm a senior at the University of Hartford studying elementary education, currently doing my student teaching in a fifth grade classroom in Hartford. I'm starting to think about having my own classroom, and want to get as much inspiration from as many sources as possible.

'A great teacher can offer an escape from poverty to the child who dreams beyond his circumstance. Every person...can point to a teacher who changed the trajectory of their lives.' -Barack Obama

Today was honestly so good I am smiling in my room alone as I write this…awkward.

I was nervous, because I knew we were getting a new student today. Not any new student- a student from Puerto Rico, a student getting Special Education services, and a student that MIGHT have to take the CMT’s next month! SO.

But I sat down with her today and did as much as I could with the LIMITED Spanish that I know- meaning I sat down with her and wrote addition and subtraction problems in a piece of paper, trying to gauge where she’s at. She can do double digit multiplication, single digit subtraction, AND she can read/write on grade level in Spanish- which was so much better than we were hoping for!! We also found out she is exempt from the CMT because she’s been in America for less than ten months- so that was also a huge relief. So much less stress than we thought. (:

Then during math, I sat down with a group of four students who had trouble adding fractions yesterday, just for some extra practice. Another non-English speaker was in the group with me- and I MADE HER UNDERSTAND adding fractions!!! Somehow the way I drew the pictures/wrote the numbers/made hand gestures/spoke my horrible Spanish WORKED and she can add fractions now!!! SO GRATIFYING. :D

Because today is Tuesday, the kids had a half day and we had professional development, which today was CMT Prep & Lesson Writing, which went SO WELL, and we were out of school by 3:30……..where I found a stray chihuahua throwing up by my car. My life is literally a movie.

(: In such a good mood right now!
