tales of a student teacher.

I'm a senior at the University of Hartford studying elementary education, currently doing my student teaching in a fifth grade classroom in Hartford. I'm starting to think about having my own classroom, and want to get as much inspiration from as many sources as possible.

'A great teacher can offer an escape from poverty to the child who dreams beyond his circumstance. Every person...can point to a teacher who changed the trajectory of their lives.' -Barack Obama

I have two students in my class-both girls-that still speak Spanish as their main language. My cooperating teacher is Portugeuse, and (thankfully) is able to translate directions quickly for them when they need it. I, on the other hand, have high school Spanish class experience and that’s it.

Has anyone been in this situation before? I feel so guilty having to call my cooperating teacher over whenever one of them have a question, but I literally can’t help them most of the time. /:

  1. anm3388 answered: I’m currently (student) teaching an ESL class of 3 students. Pictures and acting out or hand gestures is usually most helpful.
  2. sarah1223 answered: Try to complete an example with them before beginning the assignment. Make sure to use lots of hand motions too!
  3. ms-h answered: I don’t think it’s that bad that you can’t do much. You can’t magically know Spanish. You’re trying and the students are trying and that’s ok
